“Climbing is a great game- great not in spite of the demands it makes, but because of them. Great because it will not let us give half of ourselves- it demands all of us. It demands our best.”

JORDAN CLIMBING TOPO

The climbing potential in Jordan is limitless! Several crags have been discovered and bolted, yet there are still countless cliffs with beautiful lines just waiting for a first ascent. Work towards developing these new areas and maintaining the current crags is ongoing, and Tropical Desert is at the forefront of these endeavors. Here at Tropical Desert Trips we firmly believe in giving back to the community and making climbing easily accessible to everyone. Below we have are some of the Topos and Maps of areas that we have helped develop here in Jordan.

The grading system we use in Jordan is the French Numerical System. This system uses a series of ascending numbers starting at 1, with subdivisions of letters to achieve more precise grading. The plus sign is also used to indicate a slightly higher difficulty than normal (Ex. 4a, 5c, 7b+). Basically, the higher the number, the harder the climb. The difficulty of a climb can be based on several factors: Length of the climb, difficulty of the moves, the availability of good holds etc. It is technically an open ended system, but at the moment the hardest climb ever completed rates at 9b+. See below for grade conversions from the YDS.

We love our country and we love climbing, so please take care of the climbing areas! Please carry out all your trash and be respectful to the locals whose land many of these cliffs are located on. For example, try not to play excessively loud music, destroy living plants/trees to make a fire, or walk/drive/park on land that is obviously being used for farming crops. Please be aware that in some areas 1st bolts and anchors have been removed or destroyed by people who either dislike or do not understand what they are there for. We want to cultivate a climbing culture in Jordan that is respected and appreciated by the communities in the areas we climb.
